Baahubali: An epic disappointment

Cast: Prabhas, Rana, Ramya Krishna, Anushka, Tamannaah, Nasser, Satya Raj
Director: Rajamouli
Music: Keeravani
Plus: Performances, technical values, makeup
Minus: No emotional connect, music, story

They say never count your chickens before they hatch. Well, for all those who were hailing ‘Baahubali – The Beginning’ as the next big thing for Indian cinema, the ‘Telugu pride’ and what not, let me tell you one thing straight – You are in for a big fat disappointment!

The hype and euphoria surrounding the film has been exponentially high and my heart goes out to all those who spent astronomical amounts to purchase the tickets (as high as Rs 7,000 in some parts of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh) because this flick is not worth all that money.

I should tell you that folklore and fantasy are my favourite kind of movies. The fact that they transition you, for a brief period, into an ecstatic alternative world is so exciting. I went into the cinema hall hoping for something like that and also in the optimism that Rajamouli had created yet another marvel that would add on to his oh-so-famous success streak.

If creating spell-binding visuals is all that takes to make an effective film, the director would have nailed it. Because this film has no captivating storyline to glue you to your seats and you have to make do with the delightful visuals.  And it is pitiable that in an attempt to make something larger-than-life, director Rajamouli hasn’t managed to give this film the life that it actually needs. The soul goes for a toss in the process.

What’s challenging about films made in a series is the ability to build interest for the next. Being selective about what to give away and what to withhold without making the film feel like a set of loose ends requires a forethought and intensive groundwork. And here’s where the director fails. Neither at any point of the film will you feel excited about the sequel nor will you have the experience of having watched a complete film.

That is because the story doesn’t facilitate the viewer to emotionally connect at any moment. Nothing stirs your sensibilities and you are left looking forward to something exciting at least in the next scene. Glimpses of Anushka’s Devasena and Ramya Krishna’s Sivagami are probably the only exceptions to that.

And then the chemistry between Avanthika (Tamannaah) and Sivudu (Prabhas) seems synthetic. How and why they fell in love is a question we are still asking. And before you try to find your feet in, the duo are dancing it away in what seems like a set inspired by filmmaker K Raghavendra Rao’s films!

Rajamouli is synonymous with action-packed sequences which are exciting to the hilt. Yet again, he fails in the area. The action seen in the trailers felt more exciting than what was in the movie. Sloppy editing is another negative to this flick that moves forward at a slow pace.

When a film doesn’t engage, its music could most definitely be a saviour. But that’s not the case here because Keeravani’s tunes are unexciting and add no value to this film.

The characterisations are exciting, though. Sivagami is one of the strongest female characters to have graced prime space in mainstream cinema in the recent times. Rana as Bhallaladeva doesn’t have much to say but his myriad emotions (anger, jealousy, recklessness, pride and slyness) are for all to see. Satyaraj’s Kattappa would remind one of Bhairava in ‘Magadheera’ and he does a commendable job. Though Tamannaah is impressive, she loses out to a smudgy character sketch. Prabhas has definitely given his all to his roles Sivudu and Baahubali. But sadly, Rajamouli fails to highlight him the way he deserves.

The most exciting portrayals are definitely Prabahakar’s Kalakeya and Anushka. Paired with intense depth to their roles is makeup that gives them an edge over the rest. It would be interesting to see the progress of Devasena in the sequel.

Sabu Cyril’s art design is exceptional. So is cinematography by KK Senthil Kumar.

Having spent such a long time in the making of the film, one would at least expect a decent story to go with it. But so much effort and money seems to have been spent on giving your eyes a treat that in the process nobody seems to have cared about what your heart wants.

Rajamouli had the best of all ingredients – cast, crew, technical team and a story with potential – but he cooked up the recipe wrong.

Update: 'Baahubali - The Beginning' is a wonderful attempt, no doubt. I definitely agree on that. I have many people asking me why I fail to mention the fact in my review. It's just that having waited for so long, I am not really impressed by the huge money that seems to have gone waste. It is a decent, one time watch. But coming from the stable of Rajamouli, one expects a lot more.

Also, I would like to add that, this film has set the stage for what could be a compelling sequel - 'Baahubali - The Conclusion'. Yes there are inconsistencies. But you could watch this film for Rajamouli and his vision.

  1. First of all i would like to say that the movie revolves around "BELIEF IN DESTINY" in case you overlooked.completely disagree with you when you said there is no emotional connect. I would say it was the characterization of Rana, devasena, sivudu and kattappa with intense emotional connect between them meant more to the movie than the over-talked visual effects. The scene after the interval where kattappa bows to sivudu is ecstatic. It would definitely send a chill through the spines of an enthused and sensible audience(unless you are a robo).About rajamouli he made completely justice to his direction and screenplay. There is a thing called "Elevation of the scene" which rajamouli excels at.In this movie his taking leaves you awestruck if you are connected to the movie and observing all the minor details. The war scenes are definitely on par with hollywood.I should admit the first had some glitches."But its like throwing a clean sheet of paper just because it has small black mark".Just used this comparision so that you would understand as you were using sayings in your review.I have a counter arguement to each and every negative you have shown. Please keep these sort of negative opinions to yourself and dont spoil the fun for fans waiting for this movie.

  3. I agree with Pranita Jonnalagedda. Baahubali lacked many elements. Music & story are big minus to the movie. Abrupt end, as Pranita said "Neither at any point of the film will you feel excited about the sequel nor will you have the experience of having watched a complete film", "If creating spell-binding visuals is all that takes to make an effective film, the director would have nailed it".. Indian cinema has given much better movies than Baahubali!!

    1. Dude seriously!!! music doesn't mean just the songs ...the background music is spellbinding unless u were not giving attention to detail... About the story...its a simple story with mesmerising characterization...i never felt the story as a minus because i connected to the characters....Trust me and watch it again with a positive mindset instead of cursing the first half lags...you would surely love it....i dont see the reason y people who liked magadheera are not liking this...i found this 10 times better in all aspects...as i said in my comment the whole movie revolves around "BELIEF IN DESTINY". once you are okay with that even the scenes of prabhas-thamanna will make sense...

  4. You're just trying to stand out of the crowd. Experience the film; then write about it. Clearly, you decided to write about the film before even watching it. This is definitely not the best piece of film criticism I've read.

You have completely missed the visual metaphors which the film had in abundance.

  7. I wanted to know the reason behind your anguish on Rajamouli or Baahubali. So I have just read your other article 'Baahubali: A reality check!'. That article clearly shows your hatred towards rajamouli. So, no one can expect a better review from you with that mindset. Coming to the ticket prices, the benefit shows are meant for fans and the prices for benefit shows are always high irrespective of the films.

Coming to your ratings...you gave 4 out of 5 to 'Chandamaama lo Amrutham'...which was just more than TV serial...now you gave 2 and 1/2 to baahubali...that speaks all...

Edusthu cinema choosi...aa kadupu manta antha ikkada choopinchaaru...who asked you to stand in line for 3 hrs...who asked you to pay high price...
    I agree with Prasad garu..
    Well said Prasad garu...

    1. Standing in line for 3 hours was my choice - I do not regret it.
Who told you I paid a high price and watched the movie? I have the privilege of watching a show which is exclusively free for the press (with complimentary snacks might I say)!! :D

My rating on Baahubali was based on the simple point that it didnt deliver a quality product despite being in the making for such a long time. I personally felt that after taking so much time, the film had the potential to go many notches higher....

  9. Seriously!! U guys talk abt negatives while u r the one pointing out at the negatives..(Silly Me!! How can i forget positive thinkng is only for thngs u support rite!!)

She is a review writer and it is her duty to 'Call A Spade A Spade' rather than keeping in view all the money and hardwok in mind.

May be from her previous article u only cud see her hatred for Rajamouli but u couldnt see her excitement to watch the film also (Mindset problem as u stated cant help it)

U guys are not gutsy enough to put ur names and talk about people who give their opinions.. :/

Its just that there are certain sequences in his movies that dont flatter me...

    2. You have lot of negative thoughts

    No value to your review.

You gave your opinion just like I did...!

As for negative thoughts... you should ask people who know me! I am the most positive person around :D

      But on a serious note...
I have appreciated all I could...
The quality of the film isn't proportional to the time taken to bring it on to the screen.

I am nevertheless hopeful that the sequel will be a more riveting watch and will be a crisper one at that!!

Thanks for taking time to comment here!

  12. Hey,
I agree with you about the movie being a disappointment but that is only for the first half of the movie. The second half was well made.
I will write two paragraphs so i can make my views much more transparent

Firstly The first half didn't have a head and tail because all that was needed was to get Shivudu to rescue his mom and kattapa to reveal the story. So it dosent matter as of now who avantika is and what bull she does.(seriously speaking tammana is only good for a glamour role cause seriously she cant pull off any action characters and i guess thats the sole reason she was taken into the project.). So they had to put in all kinds of shit to get the story moving. Secondly the first half sucked because they have to build the basis of the story or its just gonna be some stupid salman khan movie with people beating and biting each other. and the basis is always boring. And third reason for the first half to suck is the audience are indians.Lets face it, you and me might be open minded and are ok with no romance to get to the plot but the general masses love drama thats the reason the tv serials run for 5000 episodes. And yea raghavender roa will never learn.

    Now for the second half.
To make a movie anywhere close to bahubali is not easy.you say there was sloppy editing and wastage of money. But I disagree.Expecting something in the lines of a Hollywood movie with just a fraction of the money is not how you justify a movie. You gotta look how close he came at detailing.I agree it isn't perfect but its still better than Rajinikath's Robo. We takes hours together to edit a 1 minute movie. Imagine how hard they had worked to get kind of a movie out.The money is not graphics alone. Its the combined paycheck of every single factor used in making this movie. And about the story....its as if you are trying to make soup with only one ingredient. Lets not forget this is a two part movie. The combined two parts makes the whole story. So you gotta watch the whole thing before we can say something about the story. Its just like eega or magadheera.Initially they were boring but as the movies went on the story became good. And we dont know how a loyalist turns and murders his king yet to decide about the story. Picture abhi bhaki hai.

These are my views so in case you are offended I am sincerely sorry.

I already mentioned that the sequel could be compelling... :)
2 years in the making and the first half wasnt great... I feel with so much time behind it... There should have been a lot more than what I saw in the film...

    2. I didn't mind the romance by the way... i was unhappy with how artificial it felt :)

  14. There are some mistakes in bāhubali.. but u said that it dint hav a captivating story.. bijjaladeva n vikramadeva r Bros.... bij has some disability so he doesn't hav a chance of being a king..so vikramadeva (younger bro) is made the king of MAHISHMATI.... but vik dies... ppl r in a dilemma... bhala who is completely fit cld made the king coz he is the son of elder bro..but the son of king late vik is bāhubali... he has the right to throne as well... wat ll happen is the crux of bahubali..
In the war scenes... just close ur eyes n listen to bgm.... u r entitled to ur opinion as well.... but plz value the team's work...
